Build psychological safety discussions into toolbox talks.

"Drive out fear, so that everyone may work effectively for the company." — W. Edwards Deming
Objective
Empower facilitators to guide crew members during daily toolbox talks by embedding psychological safety discussions, enabling workers to overcome hesitation to speak up and cultivating an open, trusted workplace culture that drives retention.
Facilitation Strategies:
• Kick off toolbox talks with a "Good Call / Learning Moment" activity where workers share a recent mistake or near-miss without penalty to demonstrate constructive problem-solving over blame.
• Introduce a "Shield & Speak" physical token system during morning huddles, allowing whoever holds the token to raise safety or operational concerns without interruption or pushback.
• Pair experienced crew members with newer hires for a weekly 5-minute peer check-in to build interpersonal trust and encourage asking questions on the jobsite.
• Run a interactive scenario-based exercise during Construction Inclusion Week where crew members vote on how to respond to subtle jobsite dismissals, reinforcing supportive leadership behaviors.
